Giving your samples
After you create your lab form
Bring your lab form to a participating
Lab Location to give your samples. You can use the
LifeLabs website to make an appointment or to check current wait times for walk-in appointments. GetCheckedOnline is not available at all LifeLabs, so make sure you book at a participating location.
When you arrive at the lab
Your name is not on your lab form, so you will be asked what name you want to be called up by when you check-in with the lab staff. The lab staff will ask to scan your GetCheckedOnline lab form on your mobile device. or from a printed copy if you have one. They will not ask you to show your ID or your BC Care Card.
Giving blood, urine and swabs
Blood samples for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C testing
The lab staff will draw blood from your arm using a needle and syringe.
Urine sample for Chlamydia & Gonorrhea testing
Do not urinate for 1 hour before giving a sample.
The lab staff will give you a plastic cup to urinate (pee) into, and the lab staff will instruct you where to leave your sample when you are finished. You must collect this sample in the same visit as your blood collection.
Throat, rectal and/or vaginal swabs for Chlamydia & Gonorrhea testing
The lab staff will give you a swab kit for you to collect your own sample. You will be given a different kit for each sample included on your lab form (throat, rectal, and/or vaginal swab).
Collecting your own sample is just as effective as having a health care provider do it. The lab staff will not be able to help you collect your sample, but instructions on how to collect the sample are included in the kit.
You can take the kit home or you can collect your sample(s) in the LifeLabs washroom. After you collect your sample(s), give the kit(s) back to the lab staff.
If you collect your swabs at home, please bring your samples back to the same lab location within a week.
